Established in January 2015 by Exeter University drama graduate Lucy Hirst, The Young Pretenders Theatre Company is a home-grown social enterprise that has developed into an award winning company.
Built in collaboration with our young company members, TYP strives to inspire young people in Devon to pursue a creative future through the teaching and creation of innovative and high quality youth arts opportunities in the South West.
Setting a national bar for excellence with their 'West End standard' theatre (Devon Performance Awards), TYP offer a number of professional training and production opportunities within their main discipline and have recently developed a new mission to extend this commitment to the county's young artists by facilitating more multi-disciplinary arts projects outside of theatre.
Compared to Bristol or London, Exeter’s rural location limits professional artistic pathways for young people no matter their socio-economic background. TYP is the only company invested in improving this climate, creating routes into the professional arts by establishing a vibrant hub in Devon’s cultural epicentre.
Known for our open and familial approach, TYP encourages a space where the company feel safe and supported but equally challenged to reach the best of their ability under the professional performer training on offer.
We love our city and our young people and are committed to investing in the county's youth arts ecology for the long term.
"I am a different and better person because of TYP. It's helped me achieve so much more than I could ever imagine" - TYP Participant (15)
"Lucy creates a culture of mutual support and an environment in which the children feel able to take creative risks and have any contribution valued"
